Note that the word for clothing in Russian is singular (i.e., “clothing,” not “clothes”). Russian clothing words include some borrowings from English and other European languages, but a number of words are not cognates, so you will need to work actively on learning this new vocabulary.
Use good vocabulary learning strategies!
When learning a large number of nouns on a particular topic (clothing, foods, things in a student's backpack), try some or all of the following strategies--you will want to use more than one so that you work on listening and reading as well as pronouncing and writing:
- listen to the word, saying it as you look at the word and the picture of the word
- listen to the words just looking at the pictures and try to write the word down
- write the words on cards, then sort them into various meaningful categories: winter / summer clothing, for example, or things you have in your backpack
- sticky notes: label your own objects with the words, so you associate the object with the word.
