Use good learning strategies!

As you encounter more and more "small words" in all your texts – often adverbs, sometimes idioms, you may find them harder to remember. Unlike items of clothing, or food, these words cannot easily be pictured. It may help you to remember that that an effective way to learn any vocabulary is to associate it with a context; if the word is embedded in a sentence whose information and meaning you know, it will be easier to retain. So for a word like "то́лько" (only), you will want to remember some information about Tony's family: До́ма его́ роди́тели говоря́т то́лько по-испа́нски, а То́ни говори́т и по-испа́нски, и по-англи́йски. As you can see, if you know this information about Tony in Russian, you will wind up being able to remember not only the word то́лько, but also "и... и..." (both…, and…). Be sure to let your teacher know if you are having a lot of trouble retaining vocabulary, so that s/he can help you with suggestions for adapting your study strategies.
